Organisational Development: What it actually means?

Organisational development (OD) is a planned, long-term effort to improve an organisation’s effectiveness, health and culture so it can deliver its strategy consistently. Consultants assess structure, leadership, communication, decision-making, skills and engagement, and identify misalignments — for example, strategy requiring cross-functional working but incentives remaining siloed. They then design interventions such as role clarification, leadership programmes, team development, culture change and performance frameworks. OD is especially valuable during rapid growth, post-merger integration or digital transformation, when old ways of working no longer fit. A strong OD programme raises productivity, retention and change readiness.
