Portfolio Analysis: What it actually means?

Portfolio analysis looks at a group of businesses, products, projects or investments together, assessing their performance, risk, strategic fit and future potential. Consultants segment the portfolio (core, growth, harvest, divest), quantify value creation and capital needs, and identify overlaps or gaps. This is particularly useful for conglomerates, investment holding companies or public entities with many programmes. The output enables leadership to rebalance — exit or divest some activities, double-down on winners, and sequence new bets. It makes the portfolio more coherent and easier to communicate to stakeholders.
